In the surrounding area of the city stands out the Tombs of Venizelos, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity and the Monastery of Katholikos on the Akrotiri peninsula, the national park with the gorge of Samaria, the Iron Gates, Agia Roumeli, Polyrinia and the Chrysoskalitissa monastery. Also, important sights are the fortress of Fragokastello, Aptera, a city of the 5th century BC that came to light from excavations after the Second World War and many others.
